Moments That Leave Us Breathless

Have you ever had a moment so profound in its imagery that it left you literally breathless, stopping you in your tracks? It could be a painting you saw, a song you heard, a child’s laughter, or a poem that seemed to reflect your life in a way that you could not have described until that very moment. These moments are so personal to us, that to utter a single word would feel like blasphemy. Because these moments are so rare, they become all the more special to us; key moments in our lives so wonderful that when we reflect back, these are the memories that come to mind. As rare as these occurrences are, for me they have become more abundant since moving to the Gulf Coast. I recall my first morning here having moved from cold weather, waking up feeling the heat of the sun on my face and seeing the gorgeous palm trees outside my window. To some this would be a small moment but anyone who has suffered through six months of cold days with darkened skies would understand how uplifting a moment like this can be. I remember taking a walk one evening and witnessing a flock of brightly colored parakeets flying overhead, gasping at the thought that these birds were flying free and not caged in some random pet store. Mostly though, I think of the beach and all the beautiful sunsets I’ve experienced; the fiery sun lighting up the horizon with colors of red, orange, pink, green, and mesmerizing shades of blue. Oh how small my problems felt in the midst of such wonder; my cares getting washed away with the tide. Words cannot describe the sunsets here and how they make me feel, the peace, the serenity I left behind in childhood. In the twelve years I’ve lived here I’ve never regretted a day and I’ve never looked back. This place makes me a better person. It is an area full of inspiration and wonder. And while I still encounter the same bumps in the road as everyone else, this is the one place where I can honestly say, even when it’s bad, it’s good. I may not have been born a Floridian but this is my home for here is where you’ll find my heart.
